Services Provided at Gateway Drug and Alcohol Addiction Rehab Centers

Patients in any of our programs have access to our full spectrum of addiction treatment services. We will recommend services based on your intake and personal input. Our team offers a wide range of medical and behavioral treatments, including:

  • Individual, group and family counseling: Some patients thrive with individual counseling, while others work best in a group. At our rehab center, we offer both and tailor each program to the individual patient. We also offer family counseling, which helps strengthen bonds and teaches each family member how to work together. 
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy: Designed to help patients change their thinking, beliefs and values, cognitive behavioral therapy equips individuals with the tools and skills they need to overcome their substance addiction. To help prevent relapse, patients will also learn coping skills they can apply to future challenges. 
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy: During dialectical behavioral therapy, which has seven main components, patients learn how to positively manage their emotions. By first identifying and modifying behaviors, feelings and thoughts, patients can understand what led to their addiction and how they can overcome it.
  • Trauma therapy: Our substance use treatment facility also offers trauma therapy for patients suffering from either acute, chronic or complex trauma. Patients join a Seeking Safety program, which teaches them how to make safe choices, or Dual Diagnosis Enhanced Treatment, which is designed for patients with co-occurring disorders. 
  • Motivational Interviewing: For patients who need some encouragement to stay engaged and focused on the future, we offer Motivational Interviewing. This program helps people find the positives of living a sober life and guides them in figuring out how to make it happen.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on the present, helping patients develop Mindfulness-Based Sobriety and move on. Through this type of psychotherapy, patients focus on taking action in both significant and small ways.
  • 12-Step Facilitation: Our 12-Step Facilitation (TSF) is modeled after programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), which we offer at our inpatient and outpatient rehab center. This 12-step fellowship (TSF Manual) is an evidence-based curriculum that can help patients minimize subsequent use.
  • Mindfulness-Based Sobriety: Patients who join our Mindfulness-Based Sobriety program learn how to stay focused on the present. By acknowledging feelings and situations happening in the here and now, patients can focus on these things and progress toward sobriety. Just like our other programs, Mindfulness-Based Sobriety is tailored to each individual and can be complemented by our other addiction treatment programs.

Each patient has a personalized care plan that can include some or all of the above services. Your treatment plan will feature services tailored to your symptoms and needs.

David Woods

Executive Director

Dave Woods brings over 30 years of behavioral Health and substance use experience prior to joining Gateway Foundation in August 2020. After receiving his BS in psychology from Loyola University of Chicago, he began his career as an inpatient counselor for nine years before moving into business development then operations and administration. This experience brings a unique insight and perspective for the provision of programs and services to those in need.

Dave has held progressively responsible roles as Director of Business Development, Director of Intake, Program Director, Senior Director, Associate CEO and Vice President of Operations with other healthcare companies encompassing both single and multiple location oversight.

Dave obtained his MBA in 2005 and holds Silver certification in LEAN for Team Leadership of Mission Control, Value Stream Scoping and Analysis, Pull Systems, Standard Work, 6S, Visual Management and establishing a Model Flow Cell, as well as certification in FEMA Incident Command System.

Dave believes that everyone should have the same access to high quality care and services, and is honored every day to work alongside such a caring and highly dedicated group of people here at Gateway Foundation.

Medical Director

Dr. Keith Sarpolis has over 37 years of diverse experience focused on substance use disorder and internal medicine. He approaches healthcare through a holistic perspective, believing that treatment of both the physical and psychosocial aspects of a patient’s health is critical.

Dr. Sarpolis earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.

Daniel Ross, MSW, LCSW

Clinical Supervisor

Daniel “Danny” Ross is the current Outpatient Clinical Supervisor at the Gateway Foundation Gurnee location. Danny came to the field of Clinical Therapy after a long career of other jobs, not related to the mental health profession. Danny spent almost 10 years in the Marine Corps, leaving in 1985. He then went to work in the Communication Industry and left after 15 years to go to work for Department of Homeland Security where he worked for 13 years. In 2010 he transferred from the field of Anthropology and Archeology to Social work, which was passion that he had since doing Peer mentoring and volunteer work since 1985.

Danny graduated with his Masters in 2014 from New Mexico Highlands University with a Masters in Social Work, clinical concentration. Danny has worked with Domestic Violence offenders as well as survivors of Domestic Violence, Substance Use and trauma, as well as working with severe mental health issues in the homeless population. Danny has also worked with First Responders for Trauma Debriefs, and has volunteered to work with children impacted with abuse, and neglect and as worked with BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse). He has a worked in a residential treatment program as the clinical manager dealing with both severe mental health and substance use disorders within the homeless population. He relocated to Illinois in 2021 with his wife of 37 years to be closer to family including his 3 grandchildren.  Danny has worked as the Clinical Outpatient Supervisor at the Gurnee location since March of 2022.

Program Director

Tim discovered his passion for working with families and individuals who have been affected by mental health illness through various volunteer endeavors. In 2013, he made the decision to pursue a counseling career; so, he enrolled in National Louis Universities Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. Since then he has focused his efforts on working with non-profit organizations.

Tim joined Gateway Foundation in 2016 as a counselor working with patients on one of Gateway’s residential treatment units in Aurora, IL. In 2018, he transitioned to our Outpatient location in Joliet, IL. He currently holds the role of Program Director of Outpatient services at our Downers Grove, Gurnee, Joliet and Skokie treatment locations. Tim’s approach is patient focused. He is passionate about educating and providing individuals and families affected by Substance Use and Mental Health illnesses insight into the science of the disease process of these very treatable disorders.

When to Visit an Illinois Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Center

Our Gurnee facility provides multiple levels of outpatient care. When you participate in an outpatient drug and alcohol program, you will live at home while attending our clinic during the day. Some patients visit every day, while others only need an appointment every few days. Outpatient treatment might fit your needs if you:

  • Have a supportive network of friends and family at home
  • Experience mild to moderate addiction symptoms
  • Need to attend work or school every day

If you have severe symptoms or a lot of distractions at home, you might benefit more from a residential program. We welcome any patient who needs help with addiction to reach out to us. Our team can evaluate your needs and direct you to another Gateway location if you need inpatient services.
